Paul McCartney has issued a statement on his website on the passing of Tom Petty:

Dear Tom, so sad to hear of his passing. What a lovely, intelligent and talented man he was. Love to his family."
The legendary rock artist has died aged 66 after he experienced a heart attack yesterdayDuring McCartney’s last night’s show conflicting reports about Tom Petty's status following a cardiac arrest were pouring in; Petty's death was ultimately confirmed after McCartney's concert. Before the show Paul sent a message to Petty and his family:

Petty was a close friend of late Beatles guitarist George Harrison. They played together with the Traveling Wilburys in the late '80s alongside Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. Harrison also played guitar on Petty's 1989 hit "I Won't Back Down."
