Paul McCartney in 2020: What to Expect?

The coming year will no doubt be another great year for McCartney fans. Much will be dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the last released Beatles album Let It Be. The expectation is that there will again be an extensive box set, as happened in the past three years with the Anniversary editions of Sgt. Pepper, the White Album and Abbey Road.

Moreover, an old wish of many Beatles fans is being fulfilled: the film Let It Be will finally be released on DVD / Blu-ray for the first time. And not only that, there will also be a new film based on the more than 50 hours of footage recorded for the original film. Probably this new film, made by director Peter Jackson (known from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy), will be released in May, fifty years after the first release, followed by a DVD / Blu-ray release in the fall. A book called The Beatles Get Back will be the companion to the new film directed and is set to be published on October 15.

This year McCartney is also celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of his solo career. But so far Sir Paul has rarely done anything with such milestones, so whether something is being organized is highly questionable. However, this year Record Store Day falls one day after the fiftieth anniversary of the debut album McCartney on April 17, so who knows, a special single will be released.

The Freshen Up tour will resume in May, with a European leg consisting of nine concerts in Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and France followed by two performances during festivals: the Belgian Torhout Werchter Classic Festival and of course Glastonbury in the UK. The tour may be continued in the US and / or Japan in the fall.

The long-awaited next installment of the Archive Collection will be released in July: As was announced earlier this week, the Flaming Pie box set consists of no less than five CDs, so that sounds promising.

And then there are two ongoing projects. First, the new musical that McCartney is working on: It's A Wonderful Life. Initially, this was announced for next fall, but in a recent interview, McCartney hinted at a release early next year, with a premiere in London. The other project is the animation film High In The Clouds. Its status is completely unclear: is the script still being worked on, or is the film perhaps largely finished? This project started seven years ago, and it could take a few more years before it comes to a release. But even without It’s A Wonderful Life and High In The Clouds, 2020 will be a wonderful McCartney year.

Possible timeline for 2020:

March 6        50th anniversary of the single Let It Be; possible announcement for 50th  Anniversary releases;
April 18         Record Store Day, release of McCartney-album related single?
May 8            Release Let It Be 50th Anniversary Edition
May 13          Release new Beatles film made by Peter Jackson
May 23          Freshen Up resumes in France
June 21         Torhout Werchter Classic Festival, Belgium
June 27         Glastonbury, UK
July 24           Flaming Pie Archive Collection
October 15    Release Let It Be films (original and new) on DVD/Blu-ray and the book The Beatles Get Back
