The Beatles announce new movie; Let It Be-movie to be re-released

The Beatles have announced a new film project, which basically amounts to a remake of the Beatles 1970 film Let It Be. The footage of that movie, recorded between 2 and 31 January 1969, will be used for the new film. When the film will be released, is still unknown. The original movie itself will be re-released as well. The announcement was made on the 50th anniversary of the famous and last Beatles live performance on the roof of Apple's Savile Row London office.

The new movie will be directed by Sir Peter Jackson, best known as director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He can use about 55 hours of film footage and 140 hours of sound recordings, recorded at the time under the direction of Michael Lindsay-Hogg, the director of the original Let It Be film. This movie has gone down in history primarily as a portrait of a band in decline. The new film will be completely different, according to Peter Jackson on The Beatles website:
I was relieved to discover the reality is very different to the myth,” continues Jackson, “After reviewing all the footage and audio that Michael Lindsay-Hogg shot 18 months before they broke up, it’s simply an amazing historical treasure-trove. Sure, there’s moments of drama - but none of the discord this project has long been associated with. Watching John, Paul, George, and Ringo work together, creating now-classic songs from scratch, is not only fascinating - it’s funny, uplifting and surprisingly intimate”.
I’m thrilled and honoured to have been entrusted with this remarkable footage - making the movie will be a sheer joy.”
Last year Paul McCartney already hinted at such a project, when he was asked if and when the Let It Be movie is released on DVD or Blu-Ray:
I think there may be a new version of it. That is kind of the latest gossip. Because there’s a lot of footage and the original movie came out and it was really… sort of… about the break-up of The Beatles. And so for me, it was a little sad, the movie. But I know people are looking at the footage; there’s about 56 hours of footage. And someone was talking the other day to me and said ‘the overall feeling is very joyous and very uplifting. It’s like a bunch of guys making music and enjoying it, you know. So I think there is some talk about making a new movie, re-editing it from the same period, from the same footage. We can make a new film out of it. So who knows, that may be happening in a year or two."

The release of the last Beatles film has been on hold for years. As far as known, it was the heirs of George Harrison and John Lennon who were blocking a renewed release because Let It Be would be too controversial because of the division within the band, which becomes painfully clear in the film. But along with the new film, also Let It Be will get a new release.
The new film is being made with the full co-operation of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison.
