Paul McCartney in 2019: What To Expect?

Despite being already in the autumn of his career, the past year was a great one for Paul McCartney. Now that year has ended, it is time to look forward again. What can we expect from Macca in 2019?

First of all, Egypt Station is still in the picture, because of the expected release of the Deluxe Edition. Initially it was announced that it would be released last October, but nothing has been heard since that announcement. It was probably just a bit too much, along with the reissues of the White Album, the Wings albums Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway and John Lennon’s Imagine. So it seems that the Deluxe Edition of Egypt Station has been postponed; and I think until October.

What can we expect from that Deluxe Edition? According to producer Greg Kurstin, a total of 25 songs have been recorded. On the last day of last year, the first non-album track was released, Get Enough, the third and final song that McCartney recorded with Ryan Tedder. That brings the total to 19 released songs, so six more to go. And I expect that we will hear these this year. And further? Probably the live versions of Who Cares, I Do not Know and Fuh You and hopefully videos from the various 'secret gigs' at Abbey Road, The Cavern and New York Grand Central Station.

Also in 2019, the Freshen Up Tour will continue. Starting in March with a South American leg, where Paul will play Chile, Argentina and Brazil. In May the tour will heading north with thirteen concerts scheduled so far in the US. The last tour date is set for July 13, in Los Angeles, California. Probably new dates will be announced for the second half of 2019.

Archive Collection
The last two installments of the Archive Collection are less than a month old, but rumors about the next one is already in full swing. Based on that, the two final Wings albums London Town and Back To The Egg are believed to be next. That would also be the most obvious choices. But there hasn’t been any logic in the order of the Archive Collection so far, so in my opinion Flaming Pie could be next as well.

Anniversaries
With a long career like McCartney’s, there are several anniversaries every year. In 2019, this honor goes to the albums Back To The Egg, published 40 years ago, Flowers In The Dirt, 30 years old and Run Devil Run, 20 years. But of course the most attention goes to the 50th anniversary of Abbey Road, in September. After the great re-releases of Sgt Pepper and The White Album over the past two years, the expectations for a possible new release of Abbey Road are high. As far as I know, there aren’t concrete plans for such a project by The Beatles yet, but Giles Martin, stated that “the door is open” for working on Abbey Road.
In short, we have a great year waiting for us fans.
