New Single: Home Tonight

Paul McCartney released today, November 22, a new single with two new songs: Home Tonight and In A Hurry. The tracks originate from the recording sessions with producer Greg Kurstin for his latest album Egypt Station, which was released last year and of which a deluxe version appeared earlier this year. The single is available as a download and next week on Record Store Day’s Black Friday a limited edition 7” picture disc single will also be released.

Home Tonight
The first of the two new songs is Home Tonight, a typical, "poppy" McCartney tune, the one that stays in your head, a real ear wurm. At first you might think it’s a cheerful song. But when carefully listening to the lyrics, you will hear a somewhat pessimistic McCartney: "Looks like a cold, cold wind is blowing in," he sings, or "The world is falling apart," and "The troubles seem to increase." In the song, he then offers the person addressed to take her home; a safe, warm place in this mad world. It is this contrast between this gloomy, dark worldview and the cheerful sounding music that makes the song interesting to me.

Home Tonight is an up-tempo pop song, fairly traditional in scope. What stands out is the rather prominent lead guitar, somewhat in country style, at the start of the track and especially the brass section that rhythmically supports the chorus.

Lyrics

I'm taking you home tonight
I want to make sure that you're alright
Looks like a cold, cold wind is blowing in
I'm taking you home tonight

Like a train that's left the tracks
The world is falling apart
I'd gladly help to put it back
But tell me where to start

I'm taking you home (yeah!) tonight
I want to make sure that you're alright
Well, the coat you're wearing's way too thin
I'm taking you home tonight

I read the bad news everyday
It's getting harder to cry
Sometimes I'd like to look away
But I can't close my eyes

I'm taking you home (yeah!) tonight
I want to make sure that you're alright
[?] find my next of kin
I'm taking you home tonight

Say yes tonight
Say yes if my suggestion is right
Say yes to me
And that's the way you want it to be

Oh, I'm taking you home (yeah!) tonight
I want to make sure that you're alright
Looks like a cold, cold wind is blowing in
I'm taking you home tonight

Well, life goes by at such a pace
The troubles seem to increase
I know that we can find a place
Where we can get some peace

I'm taking you home (yeah!) tonight
I want to make sure that you're alright
Looks like a cold, cold wind is blowing in
I'm taking you home tonight

So say yes tonight
Say yes if my suggestion is right
Say yes to me
And that's the way you want it to be

Well, I'm taking you home (home!) tonight
I want to make sure that you're alright
They say a cold, cold wind is blowing in
The coat you're wearing's way too thin
[?] find my next of kin
I'm taking you home tonight
